Free Training Courses
For 30 years Nelson Training Centre has been training hospitality students for local industry at a foundation level of skills and proficiency. We are an NZQA category 1 accredited provider and ITO Service IQ approved.
The Tertiary Education Commission funds free training for 16 - 19 year-olds. Our courses run from January to December. We have a roll-in, roll-out policy so students can enrol at any time throughout the year.
Workplace Experience
Our onsite Back Alley Cafe is open to the public every Thursday of the school term. This gives our students the experience of real life daily skills required by the industry.
Our free Friday luncheons for invited guests, is another opportunity for refining food preparation and customer service skills. We have had the good fortune to serve many voluntary groups and community organisations at our cafe.
Career Opportunities
We started the modern apprenticeship scheme in Nelson graduating the first apprentices in the South Island. Bouterays Restaurant, Hopgoods Restaurant, Anchor Bar and Grill and Rutherford Hotel all successfully took on apprentices from Nelson Training Centre.
Our tutors are up-to-date with current trends and are able to drive students to understand what it takes to gain sustainable employment in the hospitality industry.
